The Oncoming Storm
Several months ago, Mr. Lemon and I planned a trip to the UK. During that trip, we will not only be visiting one of my favortist people in the whole wide world, but also watching David Tennant and Catherine Tate in Much Ado About Nothing. And our flight for this trip is scheduled for… Sunday, at 8:30pm, or as it is now known here in NYC, “HURRICANE IRENE-POCOLYPSE!!!!” While...

Earthquake was not on my list of predicted...
I’m sure everyone is sick of “OMG EARTHQUAKE!” stories but here’s one more! You may remember in January when I posted about my work being closed due to a fire in the basement? And then two months later I posted about another workplace catastrophe - this time a water main break which sent a river down the street? At the end of that post, I wondered what crisis would befall...

Dear “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” commercials, I was pretty comfortable with being in light-less spaces until you guys start airing your terrifying ads. Here I am, trying to enjoy some Comedy Central, and BAM! Tears of joy are quickly replaced with tears of pure fear every time your creepy-ass promo comes on. “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark”? Yeah, I’m...

The Joys of Home Ownership
So our furnace has been randomly switching on throughout the summer. As a result, we are now down to about an 1/8th of a tank of oil (it was full at the end of winter). Also, the side door is letting in water every time it rains and is getting moldy and rotty as a result. YAY. HOMES ARE FUN.

“The Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on...”
– The Treaty of Tripoli, signed 1797 Next time anyone tries to tell you the US was founded on anything remotely related to Christianity, just pull this out. Also, to give the date context, this was signed only ten years after the ratification of our Constitution, which also has no reference to...

New post on Completely Useless Book Reports →
For the first time in 2011, I’ve done an update on my other book-based blog, Completely Useless Book Reports. The lack of posting is not due to a lack of reading. So enjoy a roundup of the 12 books I’ve read in the last 10 months!

8 Reasons Young Americans Don't Fight Back: How... →
kateoplis: How exactly has American society subdued young Americans?  Student-Loan Debt. Large debt—and the fear it creates—is a pacifying force. […] Public universities continue to be free in the Arab world and are either free or with very low fees in many countries throughout the world. The millions of young Iranians who risked getting shot to protest their disputed 2009 presidential...

““Oh no I have changed the Earth History!” yell the Doctor, “Now everyone is...”
– The leaked “Let’s Kill Hitler” script. (via lauranicus) In an even more alternate universe, there are all sorts of types of dinosaurs and they’re discussing an alternate history where Hitler wins WWII. And instead of eating the Doctor, they eat lots of sandwiches. True fact.

Today in "Think Before You Name Things": The Rail
Coming soon to Staten Island: A new affordable housing apartment building.  This 91-unit building will be called “The Rail”. I’m assuming this is due to its proximity to the Staten Island Railway. However, there are few negative associations that the word “rail” brings to mind: - Railroad apartment: The type of apartment you generally try to avoid. - Riding the...

Accio Standing Ovation!
Last night we went to see How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, starring Dan Radcliffe, who did really well! His singing and dancing held up with the rest of the cast’s.  At intermission, Mr. Lemon asks “Where are all the wizards?” Twas a fair question to ask. Fortunately Act Two is when “World Wide Wickets” gets bought out by “Weasley’s...
